               FROM A LETTER TO A FRIEND:



             I  stumbled  into  poetry  via  Thomas  Gray’s  great  poem,  “Elegy

             Written in a Country Churchyard.” I’ve written about the experience.

             I had the strong sense that I had been projected into a larger world,
             a world more open and inclusive than the one I was used to. What

             was the nature of that world? Where did it come from? Was it some

             sort of entranceway into the divine?


             The (tentative) answer I arrived at was that I had penetrated deeply

             into the nature of language, that that world was a reflection of the

             deep  capacities  of  language  itself.  In  effect,  language  was  that
             larger world. Words constantly call to other words, are connected by

             sound, history, all sorts of associations. Grammar is an attempt to

             impose order upon the fundamental wildness of words.
