Beaton Galafa is a Malawian writer of poetry, fiction
and non-fiction
A rock is better than man’s heart
in that
in spring or autumn, summer or winter
it does not burst or wither,
crack even in the presence of a hammer
or amalgamate sand and other fragments
to expand and fill the earth and reign.
It rests still on roads, in bushes, homes
to be pushed and eat up new space
without war, without hate, without resignation
still shining at the world when the sun rises.
