reflection in the windows at dusk and the fading light on the tops of
birch trees. At some point all landscapes require imagination to cover

the darkening distances, landscape which is only barely visible during
daylight to begin with, let alone when dusk fades. Add to this mystique
the curiosity on the part of westerners about the outposts of Siberia, the
villages in the east, the prisons, the isolation and cold. For now I turn my
attention to a passing Russian man who nods with a smile as he moves
toward the dining car. The sun has set, so studying the wilderness of
this expansive nation will have to wait for another day as it is finally, and
completely, dark.
